Taking a good look at your environment in school or at home can work wonders in the learning process of a person.

Learning comes in various places at different paces. The pacing differs from person to person due factors like learners inner motivation and the environment where he is.

Some contributory factors stand out, like the learning provider (teacher, instructor, guide, or facilitator), the students and the physical environment. There are also the non-obvious factors that contribute a huge role too. Some of these are the teaching concepts, the culture of the environment, and the linkages with other entities relevant to the curriculum.

In education, it has been generally identified that REDEFINITION OF LEARNING SPACES is one of the trends that will continue to prevail and become effective.

As part of the Mechatronics Specialists Training held last 2010, i have witnessed how the Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore implemented innovation in its institution. What struck me the most was their Four Cs  concept. They have done their research and took inputs from around the globe (primarily Japan, France, Germany, and the UK). Their FOUR Cs (culture, concept, capability and connection) encompasses clearly what they want to accomplish.

One of the best concepts they taught us was about learning spaces.

What is REDEFINING LEARNING SPACES

Learning spaces constitute all the factors immediate to the learner. These maybe the classroom, chairs, etc.. An old adage says it well, "It takes the whole village to educate a child." Maybe this is not a hundred percent analogous but  

Many schools worldwide are utilizing this concept, sometime even unaware.

How do you redefine learning spaces? Everything always starts with the objectives. Just what do you plan to accomplish? Learning spaces is just one of the factors that affect the efficiency of the processes. But it may be one that is affordable to our Dep Ed schools in Rizal (and in the country). It's not only rearranging spaces, but redefining them to support the curriculum objectives.

Although this is a generally accepted concept, it usually needs tailoring to suit the different needs of each institution. Some schools consider "Redefinition of Learning Spaces" as a point in their serious studies.

Starting From Scratch in Piano Playing

About two Christmases ago, we decided to buy an electronic piano. I always told my wife how piano playing had good effects on kids during their growing up years, so what better way to teach them but to just present them the challenge.

Upon arriving home, we decided to "design the spaces" in our home by quickly looking at the busiest  portion of the house. We found out that it was the kitchen but cannot put it there due to the fumes in the room when cooking. It finally landed in the sala.
